When the air conditioning quits in the middle of a Northern Virginia heat wave, the hour before a technician pulls up feels like four. That hour is not wasted time, though. There is a short list of things you can do right now that protects your equipment from further damage, keeps your household safe while the house warms up, and often cuts the repair itself down to a single visit.
A few of these steps solve the problem outright — a tripped breaker, a dead thermostat battery, a float switch that shut the system down on purpose. We would rather walk you through that on the phone than bill you for a service call. Six Things to Do While You Wait for the Truck
None of this requires tools, and none of it voids anything. Work through it in order — the first two steps take about five minutes and occasionally end the emergency entirely. Jump to any step below.
Shut the System Down at the Thermostat
This is the single most valuable thing you can do, and almost nobody does it. A system that is struggling will keep trying if you leave it set to COOL, and every minute it runs in that state can turn a small repair into a large one. Low refrigerant or restricted airflow leads to ice forming on the indoor coil, and ice keeps building until the whole system is a block of frost. A compressor that keeps cycling on and off against a fault is a compressor you may end up replacing.
Set the thermostat to OFF. If you can see frost or ice on the copper lines or the indoor unit, switch the fan setting to ON — circulating room-temperature air over the coil helps it thaw, which can take several hours. Put towels under the indoor unit while it melts. Then leave it alone until we get there.

Five Checks That May Save You a Service Call
Start at the thermostat: confirm it is set to COOL, that the target temperature is actually below the room temperature, and that the display is not blank or dim — a dead battery looks exactly like a dead air conditioner. Next, check your electrical panel for a tripped breaker, and the switch on the wall near the furnace or air handler, which gets flipped off by accident more often than you would believe. Then pull your air filter. A filter packed solid with dust starves the system of airflow and is a leading cause of a frozen coil in this area.
Finally, look at the indoor unit for a full condensate pan or a float switch that has cut power on purpose to prevent water damage, and walk out to the outdoor condenser to clear away grass clippings, leaves, or anything stacked against it. Staying Safe While the House Heats Up
A Northern Virginia house without air conditioning gains heat fastest through south- and west-facing windows, so close those blinds and curtains first. Shut doors to rooms nobody is using and consolidate everyone into the coolest part of the house, which is usually the lowest floor on the north side. Run ceiling fans and box fans in the rooms you are actually occupying — fans cool people, not rooms, so pointing one at yourself does more than leaving three running in empty bedrooms. Skip the oven, the dryer, and the dishwasher's heated dry cycle until the system is back up.
Then pay attention to people rather than the thermostat. Infants, adults over 65, anyone pregnant, and anyone on blood pressure or heart medication lose their margin much faster than a healthy adult does, and so do pets. Drink water before you feel thirsty. Heavy sweating with dizziness, nausea, headache, or muscle cramps is heat exhaustion and means it is time to get to a cooler building — a library, a mall, a relative's house. If someone stops sweating, becomes confused, or their skin goes hot and dry, that is heat stroke: call 911 immediately. Fairfax County opens cooling centers during extended heat events, and there is no reason to tough it out in a 90-degree house waiting on a repair.

A surprising share of every service call gets spent moving storage bins. Your indoor unit lives in an attic, a closet, a basement, or a crawlspace, and we need about three feet of clearance around it plus a clear route to get there — including the attic hatch and the pull-down ladder, if that is where yours is. Outside, pull back anything stacked against the condenser and unlock the side gate. If you have dogs, crate them or put them in a back room; techs carry tools and refrigerant gauges and cannot manage a friendly lab at the same time.
Two more small things that keep the visit moving: make sure someone eighteen or older is home who can approve the repair, and leave a parking spot near the driveway if your street is tight. On a hot day when we are running back-to-back calls, ten minutes saved at your house is ten minutes sooner at your neighbor's.

Five Answers That Speed Up Diagnosis
Diagnosis is detective work, and you were the only witness. Before we arrive, jot down what actually happened: what you heard, what you smelled, whether the outdoor fan was spinning, whether air was moving at the vents but coming out warm, and roughly when it started. A system that made a loud click and quit tells a very different story than one that slowly lost ground over three days. Note whether a breaker tripped, and how many times.
Then get the equipment details — the age of the system, plus the brand and model number on the data plate of the outdoor unit. Snap a photo with your phone so you are not squinting at it later. Straight Answers While You're Sweating
Yes. Warm air at the vents usually means low refrigerant, a failed compressor or capacitor, or airflow that has been choked off — and in every one of those cases, letting the system keep running makes the damage worse rather than better. Switch the thermostat to OFF. If you see ice on the coil or the copper lines, set the fan to ON to help it thaw while you wait.
It's urgent but not dangerous. Ice on the indoor coil or refrigerant lines means airflow is restricted or refrigerant is low, and the fix requires a technician either way. What you can do is stop it from getting worse: turn the cooling off, run the fan, and never chip at the ice. Thawing usually takes two to six hours, and we would rather arrive to a thawed system we can actually test.
You can safely reset a tripped breaker once, and you can safely cycle the thermostat off and back on after a few minutes. What you should not do is reset the same breaker repeatedly. A breaker that trips again immediately is telling you there is a short, a seized motor, or a failing compressor drawing too much current — and forcing it back on is how a repair becomes a fire risk. Leave it off and call us.
