The Biggest AC Decision

Fix It or Replace It? Here's How to Decide

When your AC breaks down, the first question is always the same: should I repair it or replace it? There's no universal answer — it depends on your system's age, the nature of the repair, the cost comparison, and how much life is realistically left in the unit. The wrong call can cost you thousands, either by sinking money into a dying system or by replacing one that had years of good service left.

This guide gives you a clear framework for making the decision, based on the same factors we walk homeowners through every day at Ava Air. No scare tactics, no pressure — just the information you need to make a smart call for your home and budget.

Decision Framework

6 Factors That Determine the Right Call

Weigh these factors together — no single one makes the decision alone. The best choice depends on how they stack up in your specific situation.

System Age

Under 10 years? Repair usually wins. Over 15? Replacement is often the better investment. The 10–15 range is where the other factors matter most.

Repair Cost vs. Replacement

A common rule: if the repair costs more than 50% of a new system's price, lean toward replacement. Below 30%? Repair is usually the clear winner.

Repair Frequency

If you've called for repairs two or more times in the past 18 months, the cumulative cost is eating into what a new system would have given you.

Energy Efficiency

Older units may have SEER ratings of 8–10. New systems start at SEER2 14.3 and go up to 20+. The energy savings alone can offset replacement costs over time.

Refrigerant Type

If your system runs on R-22 (Freon), which is no longer manufactured, recharging it gets more expensive every year. Switching to a modern R-410A system eliminates that problem.

Warranty Status

Still under manufacturer warranty? A covered repair is almost always the right call. If the warranty has expired, factor the cost of future unprotected repairs into your decision.

We like that the owner, Paul was onsite for the entire install. Very tidy and clearly communicated all aspects of the project. Bonus that he warranties on his work. We recommend supporting this local business.
