Why Is My AC Running But Not Cooling the House?

But the air coming from the vents is lukewarm or room temperature, and the house keeps getting warmer. The good news is that this symptom narrows the diagnosis to a handful of specific issues, and most of them are fixable.

Low or Leaking Refrigerant
Refrigerant is the substance that actually absorbs heat from your indoor air. If the charge is low — usually because of a leak in the evaporator coil or refrigerant lines — the system can't cool effectively. You might notice ice forming on the outdoor unit or refrigerant lines, which is actually a sign of too little refrigerant, not too much. This requires a certified technician to locate the leak, repair it, and recharge the system to the correct level.

When airflow across the indoor evaporator coil is restricted — from a dirty filter, blocked vents, or a failing blower motor — the coil temperature drops below freezing and ice builds up. A frozen coil can't absorb heat, so the air stays warm. If you suspect this, turn the system to "fan only" for a few hours to let it thaw, replace the filter, and if it freezes again, call for service. Repeated freezing usually points to a deeper issue like low refrigerant or a blower motor problem.
Dirty Condenser Coils on the Outdoor Unit
Your outdoor unit releases the heat absorbed from inside your home. If the condenser coils are caked with dirt, pollen, grass clippings, or cottonwood fluff, they can't dissipate heat efficiently. The system runs and runs but can't complete the cooling cycle. Regular cleaning and keeping at least two feet of clearance around the unit prevents this issue. This is one of the easiest causes to prevent — and one of the most common reasons for a service call.
Compressor Problems
The compressor is the heart of your AC — it pressurizes and circulates the refrigerant. If it's failing, the system can run but won't actually move refrigerant through the cycle, which means no heat transfer and no cold air. Compressor replacement is one of the most expensive AC repairs, which is why it often tips the scale toward full system replacement on older units. If your outdoor unit hums but the air inside stays warm, the compressor is a likely suspect.

Thermostat or Control Board Issues
Sometimes the system itself is fine, but the thermostat isn't communicating correctly. A miscalibrated thermostat, dead batteries, or a faulty control board can cause the fan to run continuously without engaging the compressor. If you hear the indoor fan but the outdoor unit never kicks on, this is a likely culprit. Try replacing the thermostat batteries and switching to "cool" mode manually. If the outdoor unit still doesn't start, a technician can test the control board and wiring to find the disconnect.
